Getting started
What is D&D about?
D&D is a cooperative story telling game where the outcome of your actions is decided by rolling die. But also it's just an excuse to get together with friends on a regular basis and have fun. There is no losing or winning play when playing D&D, but don't let that dissuade you. If you want to know more about how D&D is played and what it's about D&D beyond has a nice article about the core concepts of the game.
What is this website for?
D&D can be played in pre-set worlds written by other people, or you can create your own world to play in. I went for the second option, and wrote some lore, drew a map, created some characters and populated the world with things to do from scratch. Vostera is the name I gave to this fictional world. This website is a repository of articles I've written about various topics about Vostera, and provides guidelines and ressources for players to use to their liking.
What is special about Vostera?
Vostera is a beautiful world with mythical creatures of titanic proportions, mysterious ancient artefacts from an older world, powerful magics and brave heroes. The world is said to be created by the gods to cure their boredom. At first it was populated by the titans, who fought for the light of the sunmother, Sola. They brought upon their own destruction by fighting for her light, and Sola went dormant out of disapointment. Milenia later, Sola's light shone once more. This second chance gave rise to a number of races and species across Vostera, like humans, elves, dwarves, goliaths, orcs, halflings, and more.
Out of the corpse of a titan, a person of myth was born, the planewalker. The planewalker was the first to be able to manipulate the weave, and to be able to cast spells. She established a small village called Avendor, that grew over the centuries and became the capital of the most dominant political entity on Vostera, the Ashir empire. Before her death, she passed on her knowledge and powers to her daughter, Nola Ashir. Nola became the first emperor of the Ashir empire, and instaured an organization that continues to exist to this day, the Academy Arcanum.
The academy is an organization that was instaured in order to control and limit the powers of those who were gifted with the weave. On Vostera, only a small portion of the population is found to be capable of casting spells, and those who do are bound by the rules of the academy. Those who dare disobey quickly find themselves in a cell or worse... To this day the academy seeks to protect order by subjugating spellcaters and monopolizing access to magical knowledge. Some seek to destabilize or even destroy this power balance, but their motives are also doubtful.
Amidst these conflicting ideologies, players navigate the politics, histories and secrets of organizations, characters and countries alike. Vostera dances on the brink of destruction, and the player's actions and choices will shape its future. Vostera is a world where the legacy of titans, the ambitions of empires, the gods' light and the power of aether collide, with you, the player at the center of it all.
